Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

Often described as “psychological acupressure,” Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), or tapping, combines gentle tapping on specific acupuncture points with focused attention on thoughts and emotions. This helps calm the nervous system, reduce emotional intensity and process difficult experiences. EFT is widely used to support anxiety, stress, trauma, low self-esteem, phobias and emotional overwhelm, helping you feel calmer and more in control.

The science of EFT

EFT is more than “feel-good tapping”. It is a nervous-system technique, and a growing body of research — including clinical trials led by Dr Peta Stapleton — has measured what it does in the body and the brain.

  1. 01

    It lowers stress hormones

A widely cited 2012 study found that a single EFT session was associated with a substantially greater fall in cortisol than an hour of talk therapy or rest. Lower cortisol means a calmer body, clearer thinking and easier emotional regulation — and a brain that is able to reprocess old emotional patterns rather than defend against them.
  2. 02

It sends a safety signal to the alarm system

The amygdala is the brain's alarm. Tapping on acupressure points while holding a difficult feeling in mind appears to send a competing “safety” signal along the sensory nerves, settling that alarm while the feeling is still present. In plain terms, it tells the brain: this feeling is uncomfortable, but it isn't dangerous.
  3. 03

It shifts the nervous system towards rest

Studies measuring heart rate variability, blood pressure, breathing rate and skin conductance have recorded a shift towards the parasympathetic — “rest and recover” — state during EFT. It is part of why people often describe feeling lighter, more grounded or noticeably calmer.
  4. 04

    It changes brain activity

Brain-imaging work using fMRI and EEG has reported reduced activation in the emotional centres alongside increased activity in the prefrontal cortex — the thinking, decision-making part of the brain — and more alpha activity, associated with calm focus.
  5. 05

    It supports memory reconsolidation

When an emotional memory is brought to mind it becomes briefly open to being re-stored. EFT creates good conditions for that: the memory is active, and a contradictory signal of physical calm arrives at the same time. It is why people often say “it still happened, but it doesn't feel the same any more.”
  6. 06

Stimulating the points has measurable effects

Research into acupressure point stimulation has recorded changes in inflammatory markers, brainwave states and regulation of the HPA axis — the body's stress-hormone system. It is unusual in bridging Eastern practice and Western measurement.
  7. 07

    The evidence base is substantial

EFT now has more than 100 peer-reviewed studies and several meta-analyses behind it, and is recognised as an evidence-based practice for anxiety, PTSD, phobias, depression, cravings and chronic pain.

Research highlights

Dr Peta Stapleton's clinical trials and biomarker studies are among the most rigorous work in the field.

Cortisol
Reductions of around 37–43% within a single session, against roughly 19% for talk therapy or rest.
PTSD
Symptom reductions of 63–86% reported across four to ten sessions.
Anxiety and depression
Anxiety reduced by up to 41% and depression by 35–45% in randomised controlled trials.
Heart rate variability
Improved HRV, a marker of nervous-system balance and emotional resilience.
Immune and inflammatory markers
Reductions in C-reactive protein and pro-inflammatory cytokines, with improved IgA — unusual for a psychological therapy.
Gene expression
Changes in the expression of 72 genes, many linked to immune function, stress regulation and neuroplasticity.

In plain English

EFT works because it calms the body, softens emotional patterns and creates real, measurable biological change. It works on mind, brain and body at the same time — which is why change can happen faster than people expect.
